What is a Bone Grafting?

Bone graft is the medium placed between two vertebrae that are being fused during surgery.  This medium can be one of or a combination of the following: bone putty, the patient’s autograft from their spine or hip, stem cells, or allograft from a donor.  The patient will turn this graft into their own bone when they fuse.  The patient’s autograft from their hip has fallen out of favor because of chronic pain from this donor site and because we get just as good of fusion rates using donor allograft.
